How to Calculate Plywood for a Wall

The formula for wall coverage is a slight variation of the standard area method. Walls have openings (doors and windows) that reduce the total surface.

Sheets needed = ((Perimeter × Wall height) - Openings) / Sheet area × (1 + Waste%)

  1. 1. Calculate total wall area. Add the lengths of all walls to get the perimeter, then multiply by wall height.
  2. 2. Subtract openings. A standard interior door is about 21 sq ft (3 × 7 ft). A standard window is about 12 sq ft (3 × 4 ft). Subtract every opening from the total.
  3. 3. Apply waste factor. For rectangular walls with few cuts, use 5%. For walls with many openings or angles, use 10%.
  4. 4. Divide by sheet area. A standard 4x8 ft sheet covers 32 sq ft.

How to Choose

For exterior sheathing, check your local building code. Most jurisdictions follow IRC R602.10, which specifies minimum panel thickness based on stud spacing (16" or 24" on center). At 16" OC, 7/16-inch is the minimum. At 24" OC, you need at least 1/2 inch.

Can You Put Drywall Over Plywood? (And Vice Versa)

Short answer: yes, you can go in either direction. But the reasons for each are different.

Drywall Over Plywood

This is common in renovations and code compliance situations. Reasons to add drywall over existing plywood walls:

  • Fire code. Many jurisdictions require 1/2-inch drywall (or 5/8-inch Type X) on garage walls that adjoin living spaces. If your garage is already sheeted with plywood, adding drywall on top satisfies the fire rating without tearing out the plywood.
