What is Baltic Birch?

Baltic birch plywood is a premium plywood made from solid birch veneers throughout (no filler plies or voids), manufactured in Russia and the Baltic region, prized for its uniform core, consistent thickness, and clean exposed edges.

Baltic birch plywood is the material of choice for high-end cabinetry, furniture, drawer boxes, and CNC projects. Every ply is solid birch veneer with no filler species mixed in. The result is a panel with no voids, no gaps, and no soft spots anywhere in the cross-section.

The core structure uses more, thinner plies than standard plywood. A 3/4 inch (18 mm) Baltic birch sheet has 13 plies compared to 5-7 in domestic birch plywood. More plies means better dimensional stability, more consistent thickness, and stronger screw holding in the edge.

Sheet size is the key difference from domestic plywood. Baltic birch comes in 5x5 feet (1525 x 1525 mm), not 4x8 feet. This matters for cut list planning. You cannot assume a standard 48 x 96 inch sheet when working with Baltic birch. Enter the correct 60 x 60 inch dimensions in your optimizer.

Common thicknesses: 1/8 inch (3 mm), 1/4 inch (6 mm), 3/8 inch (9 mm), 1/2 inch (12 mm), and 3/4 inch (18 mm). Actual thickness matches nominal closely, unlike domestic plywood where 3/4 inch is often 23/32 inch.

Cost reflects the quality. A 3/4 inch 5x5 sheet runs $85-133 depending on grade (B/BB, BB/BB, BB/CP) and region. That is 2-3x the cost of domestic birch plywood per square foot.

The exposed edges are one of Baltic birch's signature features. The visible layers of birch create a distinctive striped pattern that many woodworkers leave unfinished as a design element. No edge banding required if you want the layered look.

Cutting Baltic birch follows standard plywood rules: 60-80 tooth blade, finished face positioned correctly for your tool. The void-free core means fewer chipping surprises during cuts.
