What is Sheet Sizes?

Sheet sizes are the standard dimensions for plywood, MDF, OSB, and other panel materials, with 4x8 feet (1220 x 2440 mm) being the most common in North America and 2500 x 1250 mm standard in Europe.

Sheet sizes define the stock dimensions available for panel materials. Knowing your sheet sizes prevents ordering mistakes and helps your cut optimizer generate accurate layouts.

North American standard sizes: - 4 x 8 ft (1220 x 2440 mm): the default for plywood, MDF, OSB, melamine, and particleboard. Covers 32 sq ft. - 4 x 4 ft (1220 x 1220 mm): half sheets for small projects. Covers 16 sq ft. - 4 x 10 ft (1220 x 3050 mm): for tall walls and commercial applications. Covers 40 sq ft. - 2 x 4 ft (610 x 1220 mm): project panels sold at home centers. Covers 8 sq ft.

European standard sizes: - 2500 x 1250 mm (98.4 x 49.2 inches): the metric equivalent of 4x8, slightly larger. Common across Europe. - 3050 x 1525 mm: oversized panels for commercial applications. - 2440 x 1220 mm: identical to 4x8 ft, used in countries with mixed metric/imperial standards.

Baltic birch exception. Baltic birch plywood comes in 5 x 5 ft (1525 x 1525 mm) sheets because it is manufactured in European mills that use this format. Different sheet sizes matter for cut list planning: a 5x5 sheet cannot substitute for a 4x8 sheet in your optimizer without changing the stock dimensions.

Thickness ranges. Sheet goods come in standard thicknesses from 1/4 inch (6 mm) to 3/4 inch (18 mm). MDF is also available in 1 inch (25 mm) and thicker.

In the cut list workflow, entering the correct sheet size is critical for accurate optimization. SmartCutList supports custom stock dimensions for any panel size, including European formats and Baltic birch 5x5 sheets.
