What is Square Footage?

Square footage is a unit of area measurement equal to a square one foot on each side (144 square inches or 0.0929 square meters), used to calculate surface coverage for flooring, roofing, wall paneling, and sheet goods.

Square footage measures area in units of one-foot squares. It is the standard way to estimate material for any project that covers a flat surface: flooring, roofing, wall paneling, countertops, and sheet goods.

The formula. Length (feet) x Width (feet) = square feet. For irregular shapes, break the area into rectangles, calculate each one, and add them together.

Common project calculations: - Flooring: room length x room width. A 12 x 15 ft room = 180 sq ft. - Roofing: footprint area x pitch multiplier. A 1,200 sq ft footprint with a 6/12 pitch = 1,200 x 1.12 = 1,344 sq ft. - Wall paneling: perimeter x wall height, minus doors and windows. Standard door saves about 20 sq ft, window about 12 sq ft.

Converting to sheets. A standard 4x8 sheet covers 32 sq ft. Divide your total area by 32, add your waste factor, and round up. Example: 180 sq ft / 32 = 5.63 sheets. At 10% waste: 5.63 x 1.10 = 6.19, round up to 7 sheets.

Square feet vs. board feet. Square footage measures area (2D surface coverage). Board feet measure volume (3D lumber content). Use it for sheet goods and surface projects. Use board feet for hardwood lumber purchases.

Metric equivalent. 1 square foot = 0.0929 square meters. For metric calculations, use length (m) x width (m) = square meters, then divide by the sheet area in square meters.

SmartCutList's plywood calculator uses square footage to estimate sheet counts for surface coverage projects. For parts-based projects, the cut list optimizer works with individual piece dimensions instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate square footage of a room?
Multiply the room length by the room width in feet. A 12 x 15 foot room equals 180 square feet. For L-shaped rooms, divide the space into rectangles, calculate each area, and add them together. Subtract about 20 square feet per door and 12 square feet per window.
How many sheets of plywood do I need for a room?
Divide the room's square footage by 32 (the area of a standard 4x8 sheet), then add 10-15% for waste and cuts. For example, a 180 square foot room needs 180 / 32 = 5.63, plus 10% waste = 6.19, rounded up to 7 sheets.
What is the difference between square footage and board feet?
Square footage measures flat surface area (length x width) and is used for sheet goods, flooring, and paneling. Board feet measure lumber volume (thickness x width x length / 144) and are used for pricing hardwood. Use square footage for sheets and board feet for solid wood.
