What is Particle Board?

Particle board is an engineered wood panel made from wood chips, shavings, and sawdust bonded with resin and pressed into sheets, less dense and less expensive than MDF, commonly used as a substrate for laminate and melamine surfaces.

Particle board (also called chipboard in the UK and Europe) is the most economical engineered wood panel. Wood chips, shavings, and sawdust from sawmill waste are mixed with urea-formaldehyde resin and pressed into flat sheets at high temperature.

The internal structure has three layers. The faces use finer particles for a smoother surface. The core uses coarser chips for bulk. This layered construction saves material cost while keeping the faces usable for laminate bonding.

Particle board vs MDF is a common comparison. MDF is denser (680-830 kg/m³ vs 600-750 kg/m³ for particle board), machines more cleanly, holds screws better, and has smoother faces. Particle board is lighter, cheaper ($25-40 per 3/4 inch 4x8 sheet vs $35-55 for MDF), and works fine as a substrate when covered with melamine or HPL laminate.

Choose particle board when the surface will be covered (laminate countertops, melamine cabinets, underlayment) and cost matters more than edge quality. Choose MDF when edges will be visible or painted, or when routing profiles into the face.

Moisture resistance is particle board's biggest weakness. It swells and crumbles when wet, even faster than MDF. Moisture-resistant (MR) and high-moisture-resistant (HMR) grades exist for bathroom and kitchen applications, treated with wax or melamine additives in the resin.

Standard sizes are 4x8 feet in 3/8, 1/2, 5/8, and 3/4 inch thicknesses. Industrial panel sizes run up to 5x10 feet for commercial cabinet production.

For cutting, use a 40+ tooth carbide blade. Particle board is not as abrasive as MDF, so blade life is better. Dust collection is still important because the adhesive releases formaldehyde when heated by the blade.
