What is Melamine?

Melamine board is a particle board or MDF core with a thermally fused decorative melamine resin surface, providing a durable, scratch-resistant finish that requires no painting or finishing.

Melamine board starts with a substrate (usually particle board, sometimes MDF) and gets a decorative surface applied through thermal fusion. Thin sheets of paper saturated with melamine resin are pressed onto the core at 300-400 degrees Fahrenheit under high pressure. The resin cures into a hard, smooth surface bonded permanently to the substrate.

The finished surface is scratch-resistant, stain-resistant, and easy to clean. That combination makes melamine board the standard material for closet systems, office furniture, store fixtures, and budget kitchen cabinets. Available in white, black, woodgrain patterns, solid colors, and textured finishes.

Standard sizes: 4x8 feet (48 x 96 inches) in 3/4 inch and 5/8 inch thicknesses. Some suppliers stock 3/8 inch for shelf dividers. Pricing runs $35-65 per 4x8 sheet depending on surface pattern and core quality.

Cutting melamine requires a specific approach. The hard resin surface chips easily, producing visible tearout on the cut edge. Use a triple-chip grind (TCG) blade with 80+ teeth. Score the cut line first with a shallow pass (1/16 inch deep), then make the full-depth cut. On a table saw, a scoring blade (a small blade mounted ahead of the main blade) handles this automatically.

Edge treatment is critical because the substrate core is exposed on every cut edge. Iron-on melamine edge banding in matching colors is the standard solution. Pre-glued rolls cost $5-15 and apply with a household iron.

In SmartCutList, melamine pieces behave like MDF: no grain direction constraint. The optimizer can rotate pieces freely, which produces tighter layouts and less waste than grain-sensitive materials.
