What is HPL?

HPL (high-pressure laminate) is a durable surface material made by pressing multiple layers of kraft paper and a decorative paper layer with melamine and phenolic resins at over 1,000 PSI.

HPL laminate is the workhorse surface material for countertops, commercial furniture, wall panels, and high-traffic surfaces. It is manufactured by stacking 6-8 layers of kraft paper soaked in phenolic resin, topping them with a decorative paper layer saturated in melamine resin, and pressing the stack at 1,000-1,500 PSI and 280-300 degrees Fahrenheit.

The result is a rigid sheet typically 1/16 inch (1.5 mm) thick that bonds to a substrate (usually particle board or MDF) with contact cement or PVA adhesive. The finished assembly is highly resistant to scratching, staining, heat (up to 275 degrees Fahrenheit), and impact.

HPL vs melamine: both use melamine resin, but the manufacturing process differs significantly. Melamine board fuses a single decorative layer directly to the substrate during pressing. HPL is manufactured as a separate sheet with multiple paper layers, then bonded to the substrate in a second step. HPL is thicker, harder, and more durable than melamine surfaces.

Sheet sizes: HPL comes in large sheets (4x8, 4x10, 5x12 feet) that are cut to size and bonded to substrates. Standard thickness is 1/16 inch (1.5 mm) for horizontal surfaces (countertops) and 1/32 inch (0.8 mm) for vertical surfaces (cabinet faces).

Cutting HPL requires a fine-tooth blade (80+ teeth, triple-chip grind) to prevent chipping. Cut with the decorative face up on a table saw. Use masking tape along the cut line for extra chip prevention. A router with a flush-trim bit is the standard method for trimming laminate edges after bonding.

In cut list planning, HPL pieces are typically listed alongside their substrate pieces. Each countertop section needs both a particle board base and an HPL top piece, plus edge strips. SmartCutList handles both substrate and laminate pieces in a single optimization.
