What is Panel Optimization?

The process of using software to calculate the most efficient way to cut required parts from standard-size panels while minimizing waste.

Panel optimization is cutting optimization specifically for rectangular sheet goods: plywood, MDF, melamine, particleboard, glass, and similar flat panels. You input your part dimensions, stock panel sizes, and constraints. The software calculates the layout that uses the fewest panels.

The standard workflow. Enter your cut list (part dimensions, quantities, material types). Set your kerf width (typically 3-4 mm for table saws). Specify any grain direction requirements. Hit optimize. The software generates a cutting diagram for each panel with labeled parts, cut sequences, and waste percentages.

1D vs. 2D. Panel optimization handles both linear materials (boards, pipes, bars) and flat sheets. The 2D version is more complex because it must consider both width and length for every piece.

Two optimization modes: - Guillotine mode: layouts where every cut runs edge to edge, required for panel saws and beam saws - Free-cut mode: any cut placement allowed, which yields less waste but requires a CNC router

The savings. Typical material savings with panel optimization software: 10-20% compared to manual layout. For a cabinet shop processing 50 panels a month at $80 each, even 10% savings is $400 monthly, or $4,800 per year.

Professional vs. hobbyist tools. Systems like HOMAG intelliDivide integrate directly with beam saws for automated production. For small shops and hobbyists, SmartCutList handles the same optimization in a browser, with no software to install.
