What is Clamping?

Clamping is the process of applying sustained pressure to a wood joint during glue cure, ensuring tight contact between mating surfaces for a strong, gap-free bond.

Clamping applies pressure to a joint while the adhesive cures. Without adequate clamping, glue joints are weak because the surfaces do not make full contact. The goal: even pressure across the entire joint face with no gaps.

Clamp types and best uses: - Bar clamps (F-clamps): the workhorse. Lengths from 6 inches to 8 feet. Best for panel glue-ups and case assembly. Price: $15 to $40 each. - Pipe clamps: use standard 3/4-inch pipe for unlimited length at low cost. Ideal for wide panel glue-ups and tabletops. Price: $15 per head set + pipe. - Parallel jaw clamps (Bessey K-Body, Jet): jaws stay parallel under pressure. Premium option for case and furniture assembly. Price: $40 to $80 each. - Spring clamps: quick, one-handed operation. Limited pressure. Good for edge banding, small parts, and temporary holding. - Band clamps (strap clamps): wrap around irregular shapes. Essential for gluing frames, boxes, and round assemblies. - Cauls: flat boards placed across a panel glue-up to distribute clamp pressure evenly and keep the panel flat.

How much pressure. PVA glue needs 100 to 150 PSI on the joint surface. In practice, tighten until you see a thin, consistent line of squeeze-out along the entire joint. Over-clamping squeezes out too much glue and weakens the bond.

Clamp time. For PVA glue: minimum 30 minutes, ideally 1 hour. Leave the project clamped overnight if possible. Do not stress the joint for 24 hours.

How many clamps. For panel glue-ups, space bar clamps every 8 to 12 inches. Alternate clamps above and below the panel to equalize pressure.

In the cut list workflow, clamping does not affect dimensions. SmartCutList plans your parts at finished size regardless of assembly method.
